Keukenhof’s name was introduced by Countess Jacoba van Beieren in the 15th century. Her land was used for hunting and growing herbs for the castle’s kitchen, Keukenhof, or Kitchen Garden.
In 1857, Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher, who also designed Vondelpark in Amsterdam, re-designed the area into an English style garden.
In 1949 twenty Dutch bulb growers initiated Keukenhof as a showcase for spring bulbs. The following year, the park opened already to 236,000 visitors.
So 2025 is Keukenhof’s 76th opening to the public.
Keukenhof’s size is 32 hectares or 79 acres. The bulbs are supplied, for free, by 100 bulb growers.
More than one million people are expected to visit Keukenhof. The majority comes from more than 100 countries abroad.
In addition to the tulip gardens, Keukenhof also hosts a Japanese garden, an English landscape garden, a spring meadow, a natural garden, a historic garden, a garden maze, and seven inspirational gardens that are different each year. Known for tulips, Keukenhof shows also the world’s largest lily show, at the end of the opening season.
